Ancient Forest Zen

We are a community of Soto Zen Practitioners that meets on Monday evenings in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. Our purpose is to express, make accessible, and embody the wisdom and compassion of Buddha. Our practice is based on the teachings of Dogen Zenji, Suzuki Roshi, Katagiri Roshi, and the long tradition of buddha ancestors and bodhisattvas, known and unknown. We are dedicated to the teaching of awakening and liberation of all beings. Our focus is on integrating Zen practice with our everyday lives.

Stephen Damon, our resident priest, has had a long and varied spiritual practice since 1976. He became a Buddhist in 1996 when he took refuge with a Tibetan Lama in the Gelugpa tradition. He started practicing Zazen with
Taigen Leighton in 1999 and became lay ordained in January, 2002. He started priest training in 2002 with Taigen and was ordained by
Val Szymanski, Dharma teacher of Bamboo in the Wind Zen Center in September, 2011.

In addition to his Buddhist practice, Stephen has studied and taught comparative religion at San Francisco State University with his teacher and friend, Jacob Needleman. He can be reached at 415.203.8790 or ancientforestzen@aol.com
